With this video a new, formalistic note appeared in video art, one which had a Europe-wide impact for several years. Jean-François Guiton succeeded in making a sophisticated audio-visual composition out of a video clip: minimalistic new music – transparency of means and a maximum of synaesthetic effect.

Videonale established itself very quickly, by the early 1990s it had become an integral part of the international video art scene. Its importance grew to the same extent that video art established itself as an independent art form. One of Videonale’s strengths was its openness for themes and genres. It was a meeting place where many social practices, ideas and aesthetics crossed paths. Even today it can act as a platform for young initiatives, experiments and developments and in this way play an important role as intermediary in the broad field of audio-visual creativity.
