Interview:

» 1. Your work has been chosen among over 1200 festival entries to participate in VIDEONALE.15. In which context do you prefer to present your work, festival/cinema context or exhibition? And what kind of difference does the respective mode of presentation mean for you / your work?

I like both forms of presentation.

The distinction between festival/cinema and exhibition is not that important for my work because it is positioned between performance, documentary, theatre, film & music and is transgressing the conventionally defined boundaries of those media.

» 2. How do you see “The Call of the Wild“ reflected in your work presented at VIDEONALE.15?

The film I’ll show at the Videonale.15 is called Mental Radio. It is a filmic portrait of my parents, my autistic brother and the house they are living in. He is deaf, dumb, unable to recognise faces and to communicate on a common level. Withdrawn from social reality he locks himself up in a room and draws pictures of pigs all day long.

The diagnosis of mental illness is an instrument of exclusion from society.

The fool, the savage is an imprisoned counterdraft of the domesticated man. Mental Radio tells the story of a family that is haunted by an autistic son, whose amoral savageness breaks through the domestic safety zone.

» 3. Can you describe your intention for doing art in one sentence?

My approach is: neutrality, curiosity and disrespect for ideas.

My concept is: Interest in all kind of systems: the specific rules, rituals, confines, codes & languages etc.

» 4. In which way is the video medium an excellent possibility to express your intended subjects, especially in contrast to other media you use? Or do you work exclusively with video?

I almost exclusively work with video. When working with other media, performance and installation are used always as a part and extension of the „moving image“. The structural possibilities of video are widespread:  video can be time-based & space-based, visual and auditive, live and captured, abstract and concrete.
