THE CHOSEN ONES 4.0 Schoolchildren respond artistically to works presented at VIDEONALE.15

Final Presentation of the Educational Project:

Saturday, 18 April 2015, 11-12am in Kunstmuseum Bonn

The idea behind the art appreciation project THE CHOSEN ONES (DIE AUSERWÄHLTEN), first held in 2008, is to help young people, mostly in their teens and with varying social backgrounds, to find their way to video art by letting them take part in workshops held over a period of several months. In these, together with representatives of different artistic disciplines such as dance/theatre and radio plays, they examine video works presented at VIDEONALE and approach this art form from various perspectives.

In the 4th workshop series of the art appreciation project THE CHOSEN ONES, the schoolgirls (12 to 18 years old), working together with an art mediator and three artists (from the fields theatre/performance and audio production), undertake an intensive examination of video works presented at VIDEONALE.15. With their own theatrical performances and audio plays they respond to the artistic impulses of video art

The object of the project is; 1) to put the schoolgirls in positive contact with an art form almost unknown to them, 2) to help them find an emancipated, creative, intellectual and formative  approach to works of art, 3) to see works of art as the starting point for an artistic expedition, 4) to acquaint them with an artistic institution, 5) to let them experience the way in which works of art take effect in an exhibition, 6) to let them experience how they and their fellow pupils can discover new, previously unknown personality traits, abilities and talents.

CHANCE Workshops with children and young adults within the framework of VIDEONALE.15

Final Presentation of the Project:

Saturday, 18 April 2015, 11-12 am in Kunstmuseum Bonn

In the project ZUFALL (CHANCE) children and adolescents take part in multi-day workshops which focus on theatre, creative writing and audio production and deal with video works presented at VIDEONALE.15.

The thematic framework of the workshops is the question how chance, or the seemingly coincidental, determine one’s life and can cause it to take an unexpected turn. Personal, social and cultural concepts of a linear, supposedly ideal career shape the everyday life of children and young adults. The artistic workshops, in contrast to this, focus on the non-linear, on unexpected twists and turns and disruptions, and in this way reveal the individual moments which influence the journey through life.

In the exploration of selected video works from VIDEONALE.15, whose themes and structures are relevant to this issue, the participants examine the significance of “chance” in their own lives from a personal point of view, making use of the artistic approach of theatre, audio production and creative writing.

Cutting as an important stylistic element of media production in general, and video art in particular, and the editing of material which is frequently heterogeneous and non-linear in its narrative, giving rise to new meaningfulness and structures, are an ideal starting point for this enquiry. In all workshops the participants are encouraged to work with the media (video, audio, text) themselves and create their own works.
