PLEASE RELAX NOW. Schwarzer Bildschirm. »It‘s nice to take a break from all those images for a moment, right?« Welche Grenzen gibt es? »Please let mit be your slutty guide.« Entblöße dich!

Interview:

» 1. Your work has been chosen among over 1200 festival entries to participate in VIDEONALE.15. In which context do you prefer to present your work, festival/cinema context or exhibition? And what kind of difference does the respective mode of presentation mean for you / your work?

For this particular piece I prefer exhibitions.

» 2. How do you see “The Call of the Wild“ reflected in your work presented at VIDEONALE.15?

The transference of formerly “illegitimate” culture or “non-culture” to high-brow cultural settings opens up a lot of questions about how the field of art produces notions of cultural legitimacy. Particularly when, as artists, we are in a position to reproduce ourselves in this field as representatives of certain minorities, it is incumbent on us to imagine practices that can have a more direct bearing on the structure, function and effects of legitimate cultural production itself than that afforded by mere representational politics.

The body as offered to the viewer’s eye is usually expected to leave the spectator in a position of relative security. Yet at the same time – in our current social and economic setting – the spectator’s experience has emerged as a form of value and currency in itself: immersion and active engagement have become less of an option and more of an expectation. This phenomenon is complex, and I am interested in how it connects to the increasing incorporation of subcultural imagery and depictions of sexual deviants in an institutionalised art context…

» 3. Can you describe your intention for doing art in one sentence?

The conflicted relationship I have with art and its institutions has become a central element of my work. How can we engage with a field that furthers social inequality and exclusion, with institutions that consume and assimilate, by way of particular artists, everything out of their direct reach? In the end, how can we avoid having our entangled perspectives of assumed „criticality“ add to the notion and production of „rarefied taste“ and „cultural sophistication“; how can we avoid merely enriching and diversifying dominant discourses with our cultural labour?
