One artist has repeatedly made a decisive impression on me during my likewise more than 30 years work with media art, has challenged me and also presented me with new ways of looking at things: Gary Hill, whose acquaintance with the two poets George Quasha and Charles Stein has emphatically influenced his interest in language and the structures of understanding. Gary Hill is in particular in pursuit of the forms of recognising and understanding. It is this profound contact which fascinates me in his work and as a result, I frequently presented it throughout the world in exhibitions and screenings.

Nowadays one comes across video works or installations in every larger art exhibition, confirming that this contemporary form of artistic expression is on an equal footing with the traditional art forms. Videonale has accompanied and encouraged this development in an exemplary fashion and, in particular, has provided it with a home within the framework of the visual arts.
