Over the years Videonale has exhibited many impressive video works in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. This has made it difficult for me to select my ›favourite‹. In the end I have decided on this work because it condenses action to imagery. In a precisely composed black and white drawing, rendered highly abstract by the top view, the author / actor is disintegrated. In this way BLACK HOLE not only illustrates an interesting media dialogue but is also a discourse on the artistic calling: »the artist is – only temporarily – present«.

The bygone sectarian feud under the flag of ›media specific‹ is now a thing of the past. Contemporary artists use a wide range of media much more confidently than their counterparts thirty or forty years ago. Video is one of these, and Videonale’s special benefit is that it has contributed to the development of this media’s expressiveness. That this process is far from completed becomes obvious to all who visit Videonale every two years: there is always something new, and above all artistically relevant, to be discovered.
